Als junge Künstlerin wurde sie im Kreis der Pariser Surrealisten gefeiert und ihrer androgynen Schönheit wegen verehrt. Als sie sich künstlerisch weiterentwickelte, blieb ihr die Anerkennung versagt. Heute gilt sie als eine der grossen Persönlichkeiten der Schweizer Kunst im 20. Jahrhundert.
