Shawn Maximo - Deeprecession

Shawn Maximo - Deeprecession

(Isolationism and other Myths)

Opening: 21 March 2019 | 6 - 9 pm

Roehrs & Boetsch is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of Shawn Maximo.

For “Deeprecession (Isolationism and other Myths)”, Shawn Maximo transforms the gallery space at Roehrs & Boetsch into a strange subterranean lair; part transit station and part refuge. The artist imagines a community living underground in an unspecified location with no indication of an ‘outside’ space. The extensive installation presents new works specifically created for this exhibition. As the artist describes:

"The Hollow Earth hypothesis was proposed by astronomer Edmond Halley in 1692, as a way to explain shifting magnetic poles. The earth was made of concentric layers, yet hollow at its core, and with a burning sun at its center. This luminous void was imagined to be capable of sustaining unseen civilizations deep inside the planet, who walked a parallel surface to our own. This idea is as old as the spoken word, with subterranean worlds conjuring places of origin and the afterlife in mythologies and folklore on every continent. As global warming and mass extinction come into sharper focus as probable, the idea of a collective existence underground may again become appealing beyond the pursuit of conspiracy. A global and deep recession need not be a solely economic condition, as populist and elitist agendas look for an exit strategy."
