Benno Schubiger studierte an der Universität Zürich Kunstgeschichte, Geschichte und Germanistik und promovierte 1982. Er absolvierte an der Universität Basel ein Nachdiplomstudium in Museum Science. Nach langjährigen Tätigkeiten in den Bereichen Kunstdenkmälerinventar und Museum vollzog er einen beruflichen Wechsel in die Förderung. Seit 1998 ist er Direktor der Sophie und Karl Binding Stiftung in Basel. Diese schweizweit gemeinnützig tätige Förderstiftung arbeitet in den Bereichen Umwelt, Soziales, Bildung und Kultur.

Für den Förderbereich Kultur entwickelte Benno Schubiger 2003 gemeinsam mit der Vereinigung Schweizer Kunstmuseen das Schwerpunktprojekt Binding Sélection d’Artistes. Aus den Fördergesuchen der Museen an die Stiftung tätigt er die Auswahl und unterbreitet sie dem Stiftungsrat zur Genehmigung. Bisher sind auf diese Weise über 60 Ausstellungen mit ihren Katalogen unterstützt worden.

Aus Anlass des zehnjährigen Bestehens dieses Förderprogramms entstand 2013 der Film „Künstlerworte – Künstlerportraits“ von Catherine Gfeller.

Benno Schubiger a fait des études d’histoire de l’art, d’histoire et d’allemand à l’Université de Zurich et a fait sa thèse de doctorat en 1982. Il a suivi une formation post grade en Museum Science auprès de l’Université de Bâle. Après de longues années d’activité dans les domaines inventaire des monuments d’art et musée, il a changé d’orientation professionnelle pour se consacrer à la promotion. Depuis 1998, il est directeur de la Fondation Sophie et Karl Binding à Bâle. Cette fondation donatrice reconnue d’utilité publique active au niveau suisse œuvre dans les domaines environnement, social, formation et culture.

Pour le domaine culture, Benno Schubiger a développé en 2003, de concert avec l’Association des Musées des Beaux-Arts Suisses le programme Binding Sélection d’Artistes. Il sélectionne les demandes d’encouragement des musées adressées à la Fondation et les soumet pour approbation au Conseil de fondation. C’est ainsi que jusqu’ici plus de 60 expositions avec leurs catalogues ont été soutenues.

À l’occasion du dixième anniversaire de ce programme de soutien est né en 2013 le film „Paroles d’Artistes / Portraits d’Artistes“ de Catherine Gfeller.

Benno Schubiger received his degree in the History of Art, History and Germanistics from the University of Zurich in 1982. He subsequently obtained his postgraduate degree in Museum Science from the University of Basle. After a long career in the field of Museum and historical monument inventory he changed direction and dedicated himself to art promotion. Since 1998 he has been the director of the Sophie and Karl Binding Foundation in Basle. This non-profit Swiss foundation is active in the fields of environment, public affairs, education and culture.

In 2003 Benno Schubiger, in collaboration with the Swiss Association of Art Museums, implemented, in the area of cultural promotion, the Binding Sélection d’Artistes project. Schubiger is responsible for choosing the museum projects to be supported, which are then presented to the board of the foundation for approval. The initiative has thus far enabled 60 exhibitions together with catalogues.

In 2013, for the occasion of the 10th anniversary of this project, Catherine Gfeller’s film “Words of artists / Portraits of artists” was produced.
