Fabrice Gygi (Geneva, 1965)
Commissioned by: private commission

The presence of a flag, planted on the roof of the building occupied by the Ciguë, a housing cooperative, intriguingly punctuates this block entirely dedicated to student life. With its black circle on a plain white background, the flag created by Fabrice Gygi simultaneously takes on the symbolism of the white flag of surrender and the black flag of revolution. It floats in the Genevan sky like the sign of a dissident presence or a form of resistance. The minimalist, clean drawing can be invested with various meanings. In this case the banner – a symbol of communal identity – is made available for a variety of claims, allowing students to read into it whatever they want. From the outset, Fabrice Gygi’s practice has focused on the signs and the excesses of authority. His engravings, sculptures and performances have a social and political dimension that is usually expressed through industrial materials and simple geometric forms.
