La partecipazione del video al Festival internazionale del film di Locarno era da anni limitata alla sezione «Cineasti del presente», concepita come un «inventario ideale dei nuovi modi di fare cinema»; giunto alla 57esima edizione, il festival si avvale oggi di un concorso video autonomo, nonché di una sezione «In progress» concepita per presentare le opere di «sperimentazione estrema e videoarte».
