1776 haben in Genf der Uhrmacher Louis Faizan und der Naturforscher Horace-Bénédict de Saussure die Société des Arts gegründet, eine der ältesten Akademien in Europa und eine der ersten Gesellschaften mit kulturellen Zielsetzungen in der Schweiz. Sie besteht aus drei Sektionen, «classes» genannt: «Agriculture et Art de Vivre», «Beaux-Arts» und «Industrie et Commerce». Sitz der Société des Arts ist seit 1863 das Palais de l'Athénée.
