In «Chromophobia», 2000, einem Buch über die «Angst vor der Farbe», behauptete der Künstler und Autor David Batchelor, dass die Farbe in der Kunst schweigend für sich selbst spreche; jeder Versuch, ihre subjektive Wirkung auszudrücken, sei zum Scheitern verurteilt. Die in Köln lebende Malerin und Zeichnerin Bärbel Messmann nimmt eben diese Herausforderung an.
