Sylvia Sleigh steht ausserhalb ihrer Zeit und mitten drin. Ihre Malerei lässt sich keiner zeitgleichen Kunstströmung zuordnen, dennoch war sie mit denselben Schwierigkeiten konfrontiert wie alle Künstlerinnen ihrer Zeit. Mehr als sieben Jahrzehnte malte sie gegen künstlerische und gesellschaftliche Konventionen.
