Bekannt wurde sie mit ihren Aufnahmen aus den 30er Jahren. Im Auftrag der amerikanischen Regierung fotografierte Dorothea Lange die Opfer der Depression. Einige ihrer Bilder wurden zu Ikonen der sozialengagierten Dokumentarfotografie.
