Wollte man die sechste Internationale Biennale von Istanbul mit einem Wort charakterisieren, so müsste man von einer «Biennale des Verzichtes» sprechen. Verzichtet wurde zunächst auf politisches oder soziales Engagement: Er habe seine Biennale nicht für politische Zwecke missbrauchen wollen, erklärte Kurator Paolo Colombo in einem Interview mit Radio DRS 2, und entsprechend vage fiel auch das Motto der Veranstaltung aus: «The Passion and the Wave».
