Fonds cantonal d'art contemporain

The Fonds cantonal d'art contemporain has been established in 1949, not in order to constitute a collection at first, but with the aim of supporting artists and decorating public spaces and buildings. In the 1980s a real reflexion begins on the idea of a collection that has the ambition to build patrimonial goods. This happens by forming monographic or collective work corpuses by Genevan, Swiss and international artists. Only the works of living artists being purchased, the process is prospective and very careful of the constant mutations in artistic practices. This attention reverberates through the works commissioned for public spaces that weave strong links between the city and its inhabitants.

With more than 3200 inventory entries, covering 6000 pieces, and almost 250 works of art integrated to the urban fabric, the collection of the Fonds cantonal d'art contemporain includes works by important figures of the international and Genevan art scenes, as well as the production of artists having a lesser audience, sometimes atypical with respect to museal collections.
