HOW TO DO FIGURATIVE PAINTING TODAY COULD BE THE QUESTION AT THE BASE OF FRANCISCO SIERRA'S WORK. His oeuvre so far hints at two pathways, definitely unsatisfying of course in the light of the aforementioned question. On the one hand Francisco Sierra ventures into technically demanding hyper realistic exercises and on the other hand he conducts a series called ExBolígrafo that at first sight seems to be the paintings of a forgotten surrealist. This plurivocality might disturb at first sight but this simultaneous inscription in different traditions, which history taught us to be impossible to accept within the concept of an oeuvre, leads us to an insight in paintings' potential for polysemy. The possibility to force upon the spectator contradictions is not only apparent in the two lines Sierra explores but especially in the paintings of the ExBolígrafo series themselves. Close to caricature and grotesque, these paintings are characterized by odd games with semiotic interpretation levels, moving from discomfort to genuine humor and back. PHILIPPE PIROTTE
