The Maker achter de Maker Award was co-created by Kunstinstituut Melly and the Mondriaan Fund. This award uniquely recognizes a crafts person in the Netherlands who collaborates with visual artists in best making their artwork and projects. For example, an individual or business steadily serving living artists and contemporary art institutions, such as fabricators, shippers, framers or editors, ceramicists and textile experts, among others. Here, you can learn about the winner of the first edition of the award, the soundscape artist Charly van Rest.

Today,we launch the open call for the second edition of this award. Visual artists with an experience of more than five years creating artwork and projects are invited to nominate one or more people to this award. Nominations can only be made for a craftsperson living in The Netherlands. The nomination form consists of presenting the craftsperson nominated, by writing a brief statement explaining why or how that person was important in the development of one or several artworks or projects.

Closing date for submitting nominations is 1 February 2022. Artists can present more than one nominee; each nomination has to be presented in an individual form.

The jury evaluating nominations and selecting the awardee will consider candidates based on what makes the case compelling to honor the nominee. The nominations review and recipient selection are made by a three-member external jury convened in March 2022 by Kunstinstituut Melly. The winner of the Maker achter de Maker Award receives a cash gift of €5,000.
