Formé d’abord au Sénégal puis en Suisse Romande, Omar Ba est avant tout un peintre, même si dans son œuvre la sculpture, le dessin ou la photographie trouvent aussi leur place. De ses peintures, on retient d’abord le fond noir, celui d’où jaillissent les couleurs qu’il donne à ses scènes mi- oniriques, mi- réalistes. On retient également la légèreté de ses coups de pinceau qui semblent emprunter chaque matière représentée à un fragment végétal, vrai ou imaginaire. Des pétales, des plumes, des feuilles, des tiges ou d’autres éléments tirés de la nature, si vivement posés sur la toile qu’ils composent une variété immense de textures. L’artiste réinvente continuellement les motifs de sa palette. Qu’elle soit toile ou carton, la surface lui offre un espace profond qu’il investit millimètre par millimètre pour raconter les histoires qui font sa vision du monde. Formé aux contes, enfant d’Afrique, il adopte une construction de l’image fidèle à la tradition des récits aux forces émotionnelles et aux messages philosophiques. Ce qu’il peint a la puissance de l’irréel et la gravité du constat. Derrière l’éclat et l’effusion des couleurs, les figures et les scènes qu’il rapporte sont tout droit sorties d’une histoire aux multiples ressorts politiques et sociaux. Chacun de ses tableaux camoufle une Afrique contemporaine, complexe, blessée et émouvante qu’il partage sans limite, tant ses peintures ont la puissance de séduire ceux qui les regardent.

De cette accessibilité, il en a fait une force, celle de porter la réalité africaine aux yeux de tous et d’interroger nos Destins Communs par le biais de l’allégorie et de la métaphore. Chez Omar Ba, le monde est ontologique, nous sommes tous liés les uns aux autres, au passé et au futur, et sa peinture a une valeur universelle.

L’exposition Destins Communs de l’artiste Omar Ba est présentée à La Kunsthalle Mulhouse du 9 juin au 29 octobre 2023.

Né au Sénégal en 1977, Omar Ba vit et travaille entre Dakar et Genève. Ses peintures – réalisées à l’aide de techniques et de matériaux variés – représentent des motifs politiques et sociaux aux multiples interprétations. Son vocabulaire plastique réactive des interrogations historiques et atemporelles tout en élaborant un propos artistique d’une absolue contemporanéité. L’iconographie d’Omar Ba mobilise des métaphores personnelles, des références ancestrales et des figures hybrides. Son travail refuse une narration didactique et cherche, par son caractère énigmatique et son intensité poétique, à exprimer son inconscient et son appréhension symbolique du réel.
Omar Ba été formé aux Beaux-Arts de Dakar puis de Genève. Ces dernières années, il a participé à de nombreuses expositions collectives internationales, dont les plus récentes sont la Summer Exhibition 2014 à la Royal Academy of Arts (Londres) et la Biennale de Dakar en 2014. Ses œuvres sont entrées dans plusieurs collections publiques dont celles du Centre National des National des Arts Plastiques (CNAP) en France, de la Collection Nationale Suisse (Bâle) et du Louvre d'Abu Dhabi.

Educated first in Senegal and then in Swiss Romandy, Omar Ba is a painter first and foremost, although sculpture, drawing and photography also find their place in his work. The first element that we notice in his paintings is the black background from which the colors of his half-dreamlike, half-realistic scenes spring forth. We also remark how the lightness of his brushstrokes makes any material he depicts seem like a plant fragment, whether real or imaginary. Petals, feathers, leaves, stems and other elements borrowed from nature are placed on the canvas in a lively manner that creates enormous textural variety. The artist continually reinvents his range of motifs. Both canvas and cardboard surfaces provide him with a depth of space, each millimeter of which he fills in to tell the stories that make up his vision of the world. A child of Africa trained in storytelling, the image he builds is faithful to the tradition of emotionally powerful and philosophical narratives. His paintings hold both the power of the unreal and the weight of fact. Behind the bright effusion of color, Ba’s figures and scenes are drawn straight from a history marked by a plethora of political and social issues. Behind the camouflage of each painting lies the complex, wounded, and moving image of contemporary Africa that he shares without reservation as his art exerts its seductive power on the viewer.

The artist’s strength lies in this accessibility, in laying the reality of Africa before the public’s eyes and questioning our “shared destinies” through allegory and metaphor. In Omar Ba’s ontological world, we are all bound together from past to future, giving his paintings universal value.

The exhibition Destins Communs by Omar Ba will be at La Kunsthalle Mulhouse from 9 June to 29 October 2023.

Born in Senegal in 1977, Omar Ba now divides his time between Dakar and Geneva. Using varying techniques and media, his paintings depict political and social themes with multiple interpretations. Ba’s artistic vocabulary revives both historical and timeless questions while developing a thoroughly contemporary artistic statement. The artist’s iconography makes use of personal metaphors, ancestral references, and hybrid figures. His work rejects didactic narration and seeks to express his unconscious and his symbolic understanding of reality through its enigmatic nature and poetic intensity.
Omar Ba studied at fine arts schools in Dakar as well as in Geneva. In recent years, he has participated in several international group exhibitions, including the 2014 Summer Exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and the 2014 Dakar Bienniale. His works can be found in many public collections, such as those of the Centre National des Arts Plastiques (CNAP) in France, the Collection Nationale Suisse (Bâle) and the Louvre Abu Dhabi.
