Roman Signer has spent the last fifty years of his career engaging with sculptural processes and redefining what a sculpture can be. The exhibition at Malmö Konsthall will be the artist’s first major solo exhibition in Sweden and Scandinavia.

Roman Signer is principally a visual artist who works with sculpture, photography and video. Time, motion and gravity are recurring elements in Roman Signer’s practice. The effects in his works are achieved by combining basic elements like fire, water, and wind with familiar everyday objects like umbrellas, kayaks and boots, and then subjecting them to an unexpected process. The ingenious humour that characterises his practice arises from unexpected contexts, framing, and direction that Signer gives his works.

This exhibition is Roman Signer’s first major solo exhibition in Sweden and Scandinavia. It presents works from his entire career, from the 1970s to the present day, including a new work produced specifically for Malmö Konsthall. In total, around twenty works will be shown, alongside documentation of several sculptural and performative processes. In homage to Signer’s celebrated past participations in outdoor sculpture exhibitions, including Documenta 8 in Kassel and Skulptur Projekte Münster, some of the artist’s works will be shown in Pildammsparken during the summer months.

Roman Signer, born in 1938 in Appenzell, currently lives and works in St. Gallen, Switzerland.
