Ausschreibung der internationalen Anwesenheitsstipendien in der Artist Residency Schloss Balmoral

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

 

wir freuen uns Ihnen mitzuteilen, dass für 2024 folgende Stipendien angeboten werden:

 

Für internationale Bildende Künstler*innen

 

·      Drei 4-monatige Balmoral-Anwesenheitsstipendien

·      Drei 8-monatige Balmoral-Anwesenheitsstipendien

 

Seit 2013 werden die Stipendien jeweils für ein künstlerisches Medium oder Thema ausgeschrieben. Dieses bundesweit einmalige Angebot soll den kreativen Austausch unter den anwesenden Stipendiat*innen intensivieren und eine multiperspektivische und generationenübergreifende Auseinandersetzung mit dem Jahresthema ermöglichen und fördern.

 

Das Jahresthema für die Anwesenheitsstipendien im Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral 2024 lautet

 

»Immersiones. Vom Eintauchen bis hin zum Sichauflösen in anderen Sphären«

 

Bei diesem Jahresthema geht es einerseits um die künstlerische Gestaltung immersiver Situationen, Räume und Bilder und andererseits um die Auseinandersetzung mit den mentalen Implikationen und Voraussetzungen immersiver Erfahrungen.

Eine zentrale Rolle nimmt auch die (kritische) Reflexion und Bestimmung des Begriffs des Immersiven ein, der im Kontext der zeitgenössischen Kunst vorrangig mit technischen Entwicklungen und Möglichkeiten (zum Beispiel AR/VR) in Verbindung gebracht wird.

 

Im Vordergrund stehen Erfahrungen des vollkommenen Eingetauchtseins. Das Eintauchen in etwas und die Wechselwirkung damit sollen künstlerisch ausgeleuchtet, erprobt und befühlt werden.

 

Was ist Immersion?

 

Die Erfahrung der Immersion reicht historisch vom Wandfresko bis zum interaktiven Bildraum und wirkt oft zusammen mit dem Prinzip des Illusionismus. Meist hat das Eintauchen in eine Sphäre zur Bedingung, dass ein separates Feld von der wirklichen Umgebung isoliert erscheint und dass von diesem Feld eine (sinnliche) Attraktion ausgeht.

 

Immersion erfahren wir nicht erst seitdem es Augmented Reality (AR) und Virtual Reality (VR), nicht erst seit es virtuelle Museen und Galerieräume gibt oder das Metaverse (Facebook) an unsere Tür klopft. Sie reicht zurück bis zum 360-Grad-Freskenraum, fand Nachfolger und Exegeten im Panorama, Stereopticon, Cinéorama oder IMAX-Kino. Komplexe Medien und Möglichkeiten stehen uns heute zur Verfügung. An unseren Händen festgewachsene Smartphones sind die augenscheinlichsten. Längst sind aber reaktive Bild-Klang-Welten auf dem Vormarsch. Und durch Avatare, mit denen wir neues Land erobern, winken schier unendlich sich ausdehnende Zonen und immersive Erfahrungen.

 

Trotz einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema: Immersion bietet auch - außerhalb der täglichen Vertaktung des Lebens - Krafträume an. Orte, an denen wir uns gegenüber dem Trivialen erheben (Transzendenz) und zu etwas (beispielsweise einem großen Ganzen) in Beziehung setzen können.

 

Das Potenzial des Themas in der Kunst: u.a. Spannungssituationen während des Werkerlebens, Pendeln zwischen Scheinwelt und Selbstreferenz, Zustände ausleuchten wie “heimatlos” oder “weltenlos”.

 

Erweitertes Angebot für internationale Anwesenheitsstipendiat*innen:
Ausschreibung eines Lehrauftrags an der Kunsthochschule Mainz

 

Im Rahmen der Partnerschaft mit der Kunsthochschule Mainz besteht die Möglichkeit, sich für einen separat honorierten Lehrauftrag für das Sommersemester 2024 an der Kunsthochschule Mainz zu bewerben. Der Umfang beträgt 2 Semesterwochenstunden (2 x 45 Minuten pro Woche).

 

Die Kunsthochschule fördert hiermit den engen Austausch der ausgewählten Stipendiatin/des ausgewählten Stipendiaten mit ihren Studierenden und bietet zudem die Möglichkeit zur Professionalisierung als Lehrende*r im Rahmen einer international agierenden Kunsthochschule.

 

Die Lehrveranstaltung kann nach eigenen Vorstellungen konzipiert werden: Vermittlung der eigenen künstlerischen Erfahrung an die Studierenden, themenbezogenes Arbeiten, interdisziplinäre Projekte, Workshops etc. Die Professor*innen der Kunsthochschule stehen auf Wunsch als Ansprechpartner*innen zur Verfügung. Die zeitliche Einteilung kann frei gestaltet werden; die Möglichkeit für Block-Veranstaltungen besteht. Bei Interesse ist ein Lehrkonzept von maximal einer Seite DIN A4 als Bewerbungsgrundlage einzureichen und den Bewerbungsunterlagen für ein Balmoral-Anwesenheitsstipendium beizufügen.

 

Hinweis: Der Lehrauftrag wird ausschließlich in Verbindung mit einem internationalen Anwesenheitsstipendium in der Artist Residency Schloss Balmoral vergeben. Der Lehrauftrag wird während der Stipendienzeit an der Kunsthochschule Mainz ausgeführt.

 

Für internationale Geisteswissenschaftler*innen

 

·         Ein 8-monatiges Balmoral-Anwesenheitsstipendium für Kurator*innen

 

 

Für Bildende Künstler*innen mit Bezug zu Rheinland-Pfalz werden die vom Ministerium für Familie, Frauen, Kultur und Integration finanzierten Projekt-, Reise- und Austauschstipendien ausgeschrieben.

 

·      Zwei 6-monatige Projektstipendien

·      Zwei 6-monatige Stipendien für Paris (Cité Internationale des Arts)

·      Ein 3-monatiges Stipendium für das Künstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf

·      Ein 3-monatiges Stipendium für Südkorea (MMCA Residency Goyang)

·      Ein 3-monatiges Stipendium für Burgund-Franche Comté

 

Als Bezug zu Rheinland-Pfalz gilt (und/oder): Wer hier geboren ist, hier Bildende Kunst mit Abschluss studiert hat, hier wohnt oder hier als Künstlerin/Künstler arbeitet (ausgenommen Stipendienaufenthalte in RLP).

 

Künstlerische Auflagen bestehen für diese Stipendien nicht.

 

Achtung: Seit 2015 dürfen sich Künstler*innen mit Bezug zu Rheinland-Pfalz dreimal pro Landesstipendium bewerben, das heißt dreimal um ein Projektstipendium, dreimal um ein Paris-Stipendium etc. (bisherige Bewerbungen eingeschlossen), allerdings nur alle zwei Jahre.

Announcement of the international residency fellowships at the Artist Residency Schloss Balmoral and the project, travel and exchange fellowships for artists with relation to Rhineland-Palatinate for 2024

 

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

 

We are pleased to inform you that for 2024 the following fellowships are offered:

 

For international visual artists

 

·      Three 4-month Balmoral residential fellowships

·      Three 8-month Balmoral residential fellowships

 

Since 2013, fellowships are offered in one artistic medium or one theme each year. This offering, which is unique in Germany, is intended to intensify the creative exchange among the fellowship holders present and to enable and promote a multi-perspective and cross-generational discussion of the annual theme.

 

The annual theme for the residential fellowships in the Kuenstlerhaus 2024 is

 

»Immersiones. On Immersion to the Point of Vanishing in Different Spheres«

 

This year’s theme involves on the one hand the artistic arrangement of immersive situations, spaces and images and, on the other hand, an examination of the mental implications of immersive experiences and the preconditions they require.

A central role is also played here by (critical) reflection and definition of the concept of the immersive, which in the context of contemporary art is primarily associated with technical developments and possibilities (such as AR/VR).

The main focus is on experiences of being completely immersed. It is intended that immersion in something and interaction with that something should ideally be illuminated, tested and felt out by artistic means.

What is immersion?

Historically, the experience of immersion ranges from the wall fresco to the interactive image space and often has to do with the principle of illusionism. Mostly, immersion in a sphere is conditional on a separate field appearing to be isolated from the real environment and that this field emanates a (sensual) attraction.

We have not just been experiencing immersion since Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) have existed, since there have been virtual museums and gallery spaces or since the Metaverse (Facebook) has been knocking at our doors. It goes all the way back to the 360° fresco room, which found successors and exegetes in the panorama, the stereopticon, cinéorama and IMAX cinema. Today we have a complex array of media and possibilities available to us. Smartphones that have taken root in our hands are the most obvious. But reactive image and sound worlds have long been gaining ground as well. And by means of avatars, with which we can conquer new worlds, a sheer infinity of expanding zones and immersive experiences are beckoning to us.

Notwithstanding any critical exploration of the theme – immersion also offers spaces of power outside the routine of daily life. Places in which we rise above the trivial (transcendence) and can place ourselves in relation to something (such as a great oneness).

The potential of the theme in art: among other things, situations of tension while experiencing the work, oscillation between fake world and self-reference, shedding light on states of being such as “homeless” (unhoused/displaced) or “worldless”.

Expanded invitation for international residential fellows:
Call for applications for teaching position at the Mainz Academy of Fine Arts

 

The partnership with the Mainz Academy of Fine Arts (Kunsthochschule Mainz) includes the opportunity to apply for a separately-remunerated teaching position for the 2024 Summer Semester at the Mainz Academy of Fine Arts. This would involve 2 semester periods (of 45 minutes each) per week during the semester.

 

In this way, the Academy of Fine Arts wishes to foster close contacts between the selected fellow and its students, and it also offers the opportunity for becoming a teaching professional within the scope of an internationally-active art academy.

 

The successful applicant will be able to structure his or her teaching as he or she wishes, perhaps covering for instance communication of his or her own experience as an artist to the students, theme-related work, interdisciplinary projects, workshops, etc. The professors at the Academy of Fine Arts will be available as needed for advice, etc. The time allocation is at the successful applicant’s own free discretion, and it will be possible to hold block seminars. If you are interested, please submit your teaching concept of no more than one A4 page as the basis of your application, attaching your application documents for a Balmoral residential fellowship as an appendix.

 

Please note that the teaching position will only be awarded in conjunction with an international residential fellowship in the Kuenstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral. The teaching appointment will be carried out at the Mainz Academy of Fine Arts during the period of the residency.

 

For international fellows in the humanities

 

·      One 8-month Balmoral residential fellowship for a curator

 

 

The project, travel and exchange fellowships for visual artists with a relation to Rhineland-Palatinate financed by the Ministry for Family, Women, Culture and Integration are announced.

 

Project, travel and exchange fellowships for visual artists with relation to Rhineland-Palatinate

 

Relation to Rhineland-Palatinate means (and/or): is born here, studied Fine Arts with graduation here or works as an artist here (except fellowship stays in RLP).

 

For these fellowships there are no artistic requirements.

 

Attention: Since 2015, artists with relation to Rhineland-Palatinate can apply three times for each state fellowship, meaning three times for a project fellowship, three times for a fellowship in Paris etc. (past applications included), but only every two years.

 

The application period for all fellowships runs up to and including May 5, 2023 (date of postmark). Detailed information and application forms are available on our homepage.
