Pierre Bismuth (Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, 1963)
Collection: Fonds d'art contemporain de la Ville et du Canton de Genève (FMAC and FCAC), Neon Parallax project

Through his artistic practice, Pierre Bismuth endeavors to reveal the categories and implicit constructions that govern our social and cultural environment. His works explore the proliferation of images, as well as the conventions and signs that come from marketing or the society of the spectacle. With Coming Soon! he suggests we see the space and time that surround us as an immense arena in which anything could happen. Making his own use of an expression from movie trailers, he offers viewers the promise of a fiction to come. This fiction that never materializes turns into an invitation to take over public space with our imagination, projecting fantasies of our own choosing upon it. The work plays on the desires and expectations of viewers who are constantly solicited by the urban messages and advertisement scripts that inundate our everyday lives. Coming Soon! speaks to us of the hope and exaltation of a coming event whose occurrence is suspended in a state of uncertainty, this suspension probably being more exciting than the materialization of the event itself.
