Die documenta, 1955 vom Kasseler Malereiprofessor und Designer Arnold Bode initiiert, ist heute die weltweit bedeutendste Ausstellung für zeitgenössische Kunst. Ursprüngliches Ziel der Ausstellung war, den Besuchern diejenige Kunst nahe zu bringen, welche im Nazideutschland unter der Bezeichnung «Entartete Kunst» verfemt war. Die hunderttägige Ausstellung findet mittlerweile alle fünf Jahre statt. Drei Fragen wurden für die documenta 12 als Leitmotive formuliert: Ist die Moderne unsere Antike? Was ist das blosse Leben? Was tun?
