Begonnen hat er als einer der «Young British Artists», die 1988 mit der Londoner Ausstellung «Freeze» Furore machten. Statt auf Provokationen wie Damien Hirst oder Tracey Emin setzt Mark Wallinger auf politisches Gewissen und kluge Ironie. 2007 wurde er dafür mit dem «Turner Prize» ausgezeichnet.
