Seit 1955 findet das Grossereignis in Kassel statt. Als Rehabilitation der Moderne und als Bollwerk gegen den Osten eingeführt, waren die Ausstellungen zunächst auf europäische und amerikanische Kunstschaffende beschränkt. Diesmal sind es rund 200 Künstler und Künstlerinnen aus 55 Nationen.
