A diverse and vibrant culture enhances the quality of life and acts as a driving force in society. The Division of Cultural Affairs at theDepartment of Presidential Affairs of the Canton of Basel-Stadt is responsible for implementing the cultural policies adopted by the Government, and hence for the promotion of culture at the cantonal level. The Division supports cultural institutions, projects and independent creators of culture and art. It seeks to promote favourable framework conditions for the development, preservation, research, collection and communication of professional culture. On top of this, the Division provides incentives to guarantee and enhance the quality of the city’s cultural offerings. The Division of Cultural Affairshas seven offices working to safeguard and communicate our cultural heritage:Archäologische Bodenforschung Basel-Stadt (Basel-Stadt archaeological soil research), Antikenmuseum Basel und Sammlung Ludwig (Basel Museum of Antiquities and the Ludwig Collection), Historisches Museum Basel (Basel Museum of History), Kunstmuseum Basel (Basel Museum of Art), Museum der Kulturen Basel (Basel Museum of Cultures ), Naturhistorisches Museum Basel (Basel Museum of Natural History)  and Staatsarchiv Basel-Stadt (Basel-Stadt Record Office).
